Abstract

Due to a random, because not exactly foreseeable arriving of production orders and basic materials (delivery of supplier, retrieval from a storage area) on a first production area and a not constant transmission delay it comes to an irregular delivery of the finished orders at the second production area following. To achieve a high extent of utilisation there, nevertheless, a continuous treatment with constant supply is aimed. The solution is an intermediate buffer, which decouples the two processes. In this article a method is introduced which determines the distribution of the buffer occupancy on an analytical way and allows an estimation of the required size of the decoupling buffer with a predefined statistical safety.
