Abstract

A company’s inventory management must comply with strong standards concerning data availability, security and consistency. All this can be achieved today with centralized data keeping in a Warehouse Management System. Contrariwise, in other areas (e. g. material flow, transport and production control) a trend towards distributed control strategies can be observed, which promise a greater flexibility and reduced complexity. In a project that was funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) we present and discuss in this contribution concepts for a decentralized design of inventory management systems.
